August Calendar Stuff

Yes, it’s already August. I know. All that stuff you said you’d do this summer–like lose ten pounds, unpack your boxes, or do something new on a Friday night–you have one month left! Luckily, there’s some really fun stuff going on in Houston this month. While there are no more “summer breaks” after college (tear), you can still have some summer fun before the season’s up.

1. The ‘Stros vs. Everyone. I know, I know. Our Astros aren’t having a very good season. But that doesn’t stop the fans from supporting them. Did you know that, statistically, people who root for the home team are more likely to feel happy? It’s true! So root for the Astros this summer. Get a group of friends together at a game in Minute Maid Park (hey, it’s better than Enron Field). And if they don’t win, it’s a shame.

2.The Paper Runway. That’s right. An exhibit of clothing made entirely from paper that would knock Tim Gunn’s socks off. A fun outing for the fashionably inclined.

3. Houston Restaurant Week. Yeehaw! My kind of event! After all, summer is almost over. So we’ll save the bikini body aspirations until NEXT summer. “Savor the best of the city’s culinary scene at Houston Restaurant Week. Benefiting the Houston Food Bank, the event is an enticing opportunity to enjoy our impressive array of fine dining restaurants at prices that won’t break the bank, all while helping fight hunger in Houston.” Eat for a good cause!

4. 20th Annual Houston International Jazz Festival. Experience one of the greatest American art forms right here in Houston at the beautiful Discovery Green Park. This weekend! The event features some of the best jazz artists from around the world. A Houston tradition. Don’t miss it!

5. 21st Houston Press Music Awards Showcase. Join the 6,000 Houstonians that will turn out for this incredible music event on the Washington Corridor on August 11th. See over 60 bands on 11 stages at some of the hottest venues in town for just $20 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Music Therapy Center of Houston.

6. 4th Annual Casino Night. Can’t make it to Vegas this summer? The Health Museum of Houston brings Vegas to you. The museum’s annual fundraiser includes Vegas performers, casino gaming, and an exclusive poker tournament. Held at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts on August $21, tickets are $150.

7. Houston Wedding Showcase. Got a wedding on your calendar? Don’t miss the Houston Wedding Showcase where wedding vendors converge for your wedding planning pleasure at the George R. Brown Convention Center. A must for any bride!
