Discovery Green

Spring is in full swing here in Houston which means some of the best weather of the year is fast approaching. Clear skies. Mild temperatures. Warm breezes. The Gulf Coast can be pretty darn glorious this time of year. But in the big city, when and where can you find excuses to enjoy it?

Discovery Green is Houston’s Central Park, if you will. It’s a free public park in downtown Houston and located just across from the George R. Brown convention center and next to the Toyota Center. You literally can’t miss it. (But here’s directions just in case…)

Discovery Green is approximately 12 acres of lush beauty. It has incredible landscaping and tons of great features that make spending the day here both convenient and unique. Pack a lunch or eat at one of two restaurants in the park. Bring your dog and let him enjoy the dog run while you watch the kids. The park also functions as a cultural center, featuring art from local Houston artists and serving as a venue for performances and events. There’s also a jogging trail, a putting green, a playground, the list goes on.

But the park is also a statement for the green movement. Eco-friendly practices and design are everywhere you look, from recycling bins to massive solar panels to rescued mature oaks. The park even received its coveted LEED Gold Certification last fall. Discovery Green is one of the most ambitious green projects in the Houston area.

So pack a picnic–or don’t–and head to Discovery Green in honor of the first glorious spring Saturday. Check the events calendar often so you don’t miss anything. Discovery Green is bound to be your go-to spot when you need a little sunshine.
