Don’t-Miss September Events in Houston

Summer might be over. But September has plenty to offer you, with tons of awesome events happening inside the loop and around the Houston area. Here are my top picks!

Rice vs. Texas in Reliant Stadium

On Saturday, September 4, 2010, an old rivalry in Texas college football will have a long over-due rematch. Rice and Texas will go head to head in Reliant Stadium. Even though the odds are dramatically in the Longhorns’ favor, you know what they say: “On any given Sunday.” But in this case, it’s a Saturday of course. Tickets are on sale at TicketMaster outlets and online at

Labor Day Weekend Sale @ Houston Premium Outlets

This Labor Day Weekend, you’ll find even greater discounts at the Houston Premium Outlets. Got some last minute back-to-school or back-to-college shopping to do? Or maybe just some shopping? You won’t want to miss this chance to get great deals on designer duds. It’s well worth the drive to Cypress for all you inner-loopers.

Simon Fashion Show

Calling all Fashionistas. This one’s for you. On September 9-11th, you’ll want to make a day of it at The Galleria. Come early for front row seats to view the greatest hits in fall fashion at the Simon Fashion Now, hosted by The Galleria and presented by Cadillac. The event is free (FREE!) and starts on Thursday with Trends & Friends night, which includes a fashion show and free cocktails and appetizers. It continues on Friday with public fashion shows offering first-come, first-serve seating. On Saturday, retailers will offer related in-store promotions and special discounts. Participating Galleria retailers include Saks Fifth Avenue, 7 For All Mankind, Apricot Lane Boutique, Betsey Johnson, Club Monaco, Banana Republic, Metropark, Miss Sixty, Salvatore Ferragamo and Steve Madden.

Oktoberfest at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts

Yes, I know this is in September. But let’s face it, the appeal of any Oktoberfest has nothing to do with the time of year. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will celebrate the opening of its German Impressionist exhibitions with an Oktoberfest festival from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 outside of the museum’s Beck Building, 5601 Main St. This is another FREE event, y’all! However, admission to the museum itself is $7. The event includes complimentary beer and root beer samples from Saint Arnold Brewery; Bavarian-style soft pretzels from Slow Dough Bread Co.; German music by Peter Menzel; dancing by Die Lustige Tanzers; art stations; and German wine and food. Come celebrate Texas’s long history of German Heritage.

Anthony Bourdain @ SPA Houston

He’s surly. He smokes like a stack and pours Scotch on his cereal. But we love him anyway. On September 20th, Anthony Bourdain himself will be at Jones Hall for one night only. Hosted by the Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) in Downtown, this is your chance to see the anti-culinary-establishment legend in the flesh. The event includes an open question and answer session with the New York Times best-selling author, host of the Travel Channel’s No Reservations, and bad boy of the culinary world. Stand aside Gordon Ramsey. Tickets cost $20-$55.

Museum District Day

Need another free (FREE!) September event on your calendar? Enjoy a day in the Houston Museum District on Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Board a free bus shuttle at any participating museum and spend the entire day browsing your favorites and discovering new ones. Some museums are always free and others charge a fee for admission, so this is your chance to see all of them for free, free, free. You’ll also see fascinating exhibitions, hands-on activities, demonstrations and performances throughout the day.
