Escalante’s: FINE Mexican Food

Houstonians are always on the lookout for a great Tex-Mex spot for Friday nights. You can’t beat the lively atmosphere, sizzling grills, and margaritas with salt. But occasionally, you want to skip the vinyl table cloths and combination plates for something a little more upscale. And Escalante’s is the place.

Last Friday I visited their Highland Village location, just one of five in the greater Houston area. This place was hopping and I had some of the best gourmet Tex-Mex I’ve ever tasted. And yes, you can use “gourmet” and “Tex-Mex” in the same sentence. I just did it.

I tried the Escalante’s Especial, which includes empanadas (yes), fresh enchiladas (yes, yes), and bacon-wrapped quail (mmhmm). It was absolutely incredible and I could really taste the freshness of the ingredients. Then I ate my weight in chips and salsa because the salsa was fantastic.

Great food combined with a sleek, stylish atmosphere make Escalante’s a great spot for weekend nights out with friends or even business dinners with your favorite clients.

Now, I won’t be giving up my nacho-cheesy, go-to Tex-Mex spots anytime soon. You can’t replace a Texas tradition. But Escalante’s is a refreshing twist on an old favorite. Their locations include Highland Village, Woodway @ Voss, Meyerland Plaza, Town & Country, and Sugar Land.
