How to Help Texas Wildfire Victims

It’s been an emotional few weeks. Hurricane Irene tore up the east coast. Torrential flooding caused massive flooding in Pennsylvania and beyond. And to top it all off, Americans marked the 10th Anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Last week, Texas got a little taste of destruction and loss when wildfires broke out across the state. I know I was in shock as I flipped through image after image of burning homes, walls of smoke and acres of blazing trees. Here in Houston, we couldn’t help feeling a little useless as our friends in Austin, Bastrop and Fayette County lost everything, especially as a thin haze of smoke drifted over Downtown. Almost everybody knows someone affected by the fires.

Texans really know how to pull together in times like these. I am seriously considering purchasing a new mattress after seeing that Mattress Mack is donating a mattress to Texas wildfire victims for every mattress sold this week. And, our own KHOU Channel 11 News site has compiled a list of donation campaigns.

The Texas Wildfire Relief Fund works to keep our state’s volunteer firefighters going during wildfire season. Wildfires are a concern year-round and this organization works to raise awareness and works to make sure Texas is prepared for potential fires. You can donate to the Texas Wildfire Relief Fund on their website.

This Austin blogger knows how difficult it can be when your family members lose everything. One of her family members lost a pet when their house went up in flames as they sped out of the driveway. You can donate to this chapter of the American Red Cross to help victims of the Bastrop fire or if you have loved ones affected by the fires, you can start your own donation drive as this blogger did.
