Neighborhood Crash Course: Rice University

Rice University is a very unique area of Houston. You can easily forget you’re in the nation’s 4th largest city as you cruise the streets of this ‘quaint’ neighborhood. Students bombard the crosswalks with books in hand, mom’s chauffeur their kids here and there. It’s a town within a town.

The Rice district obviously revolves around one thing: Rice University. As one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, Rice University is a major cultural center in Houston and within the education community. When you step on Rice campus, the brain power is electric. Or maybe it’s just the endless green grass, towering oaks, and massive Byzantine buildings that overwhelm you.

The university is surrounded by stunning tree-lined streets and the homes situated on them are prime real estate. People love the eclectic feel of the area, making Rice one of the more sought-after areas in the city. The area is made up of Rice students, both graduate and undergraduate, and professionals commuting the short distance to the Medical Center.

Rice is an ideal neighborhood because of it’s proximity to the other major areas inside the loop. Work at the Medical Center? You’re just around the corner in Rice University. Work in Midtown? Montrose? You’re looking at an easy commute, because is in the big middle of everything. Plus, Rice has one of the best public transport systems in the city. Catch the METRORail to Midtown or further south.

The pride and joy of Rice University, next to the university itself, is the Rice Village shopping center. This massive network of shops is bound to give your wallet a workout. There are tons of boutique shops and restaurants as well as high end and designer shops.

The neighborhood has many treasured Houston restaurants, like the Black Walnut Cafe, a casual chic cafe perfect for lounging or studying, and D’Amico’s Italian Market cafe, a go-to spot for native Italian cuisine at the center of Rice Village. And those hard-working Rice students do find time to blow off steam, believe it or not. Rice has a bustling nightlife that includes the Ginger Man, a trendy dark pub popular with the local student crowd, and Ovations, a rare jazz spot.

Rice University is also extremely safe. Residents of the area benefit from Houston PD as well as Rice security. It’s a perfect area for families and those who are still getting used to the rush of city life.

Rice University has it all: great shopping and dining, college-town vibe, gorgeous atmosphere, and easy access to the rest of the city. Let’s find you a place!
