Neighborhood Crash Course: The Heights

If Houston were a high school, the Heights would be class favorite. If it were a beauty pageant, the Heights would win Miss Congeniality. If it were “Everybody Loves Raymond,” the Heights would be–you guessed it–Raymond. Everybody loves the Heights. How could you not? It’s cool. It’s hip. It’s eclectic. It’s got loads of character, great architecture, and old Houston oaks. It’s no wonder that the Heights is the most sought after neighborhood in Houston.

The Heights is located in the northwestern corner of the city, bound on the south end by Interstate 10 and on the north side by the North Loop. The area covers zip codes 77007 and 77008.

The Heights has much to offer its residents. As one of the oldest, original Houston neighborhoods, the Heights has tons of mature trees, giving it a romantic, southern feel. Also, many of the original Victorian and Craftsman homes are still in tact, which brings loads of charm and history. The area has undergone a revitalization in recent years, with young professionals, artists and families buying and restoring the old homes. This produced a lively, younger community with one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops.

The Heights is an artists’ hub and actually has the highest concentration of professional artists in the entire state. The neighborhood has tons of galleries, including the Redbud Gallery, Nauhaus Gallery, and the Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery, just to name a few. Local artists and enthusiasts never miss the Heights Arts Market on the first Saturday of each month.

Nightlife is another important part of life in the Heights. With close proximity to Washington Avenue, the nightlife headquarters of the city, Heights dwellers have access to the best nightspots in town, like the Boom Boom Room, The Drake and Onion Creek. Fitzgerald’s in the Heights is a musical center, where local musicians and big name groups perform. There are also tons of quirky restaurants, farmer’s markets, and boutique shops.

The Heights has it all! The history, the culture, the coolness. It’s a miniature Austin. The area is perfect for young families who want a slower pace while staying close to the city or young singles who want to be near the action. And I know all of the best apartments in the Heights. No surprises there either. There are several great apartment properties smack in the middle of all the Heights greatness. Let’s find one for you.
